Active aging should be everyone's concern. As is well known, Portugal has one of the oldest populations in Europe, and more and better policies are needed to support these age groups.

According to PORDATA , Portugal had an aging index — the number of people aged 65 or over for every 100 people under 15 — of 183.5% in 2022. In 1961, it was only 27.5%.

These numbers show that active aging for seniors should be a priority, so that, in addition to a long life, they can have a truly happy life.

What is active aging?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines active aging as a “process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation and safety, to improve the quality of life of people as they age .

1. Health

It is vital that our elderly are constantly aware of disease prevention , that they attend regular checkups, and that they promote healthy lifestyles that include physical exercise and a proper diet.

Access to healthcare is crucial for everyone in general, but even more so for the elderly. Among these concerns, we highlight mental health as a pillar in building a happy and healthy life.

Health literacy for older adults can be a key factor in helping them become better informed about the symptoms of the most common diseases in this age group. In this regard, the Hug Group is available to anyone who needs our support and advice.

2. Participation

This pillar is fundamental for quality active aging, continuing to actively participate in society and not just being a recipient of healthcare. We must age with quality and respect each individual's identity. Being able to participate in social, economic, cultural, spiritual, and civic life allows us to maintain an active mind and fosters autonomy.

Having employment opportunities and the possibility of volunteering can be an effective way for older people to integrate into society and feel a sense of purpose.

3. Security

Another pillar concerns the safety of older adults, and providing social support and a supportive network is essential to ensuring their safety. Housing with everything appropriate for mobility and safety promotes independence and quality of life. Furthermore, safe and accessible transportation plays a crucial role in accessing services, socializing, and maintaining an active lifestyle.

How to promote active aging?

Promoting active aging must come from individuals themselves and their peers. However, society and the government must have strategies and programs that contribute positively to healthier and happier aging.

Aging policies in Portugal

The state plays a fundamental role in providing social support and promoting specific programs that contribute to healthier and more harmonious aging. What has been done in this regard?

  • National Strategy for Active and Healthy Aging (ENEAS) : The objective of this program is to promote independence and autonomy through collaboration between various entities and the implementation of active and healthy aging policies.

  • Digital Literacy Initiatives : Promotes the inclusion of older people in the use of digital technologies when accessing online services.

  • Day centers and community centers : These offer spaces for socializing, recreational and educational activities, and daytime support, providing health and wellness services.

  • Collaborative and Community Housing : This initiative aims to provide innovative residential solutions for seniors and vulnerable individuals, promoting social interaction and combating isolation.

  • “Older Portugal” Project : Supported by APAV and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, its objective is to train elderly caregivers and raise awareness among politicians about aging and violence against the elderly, improving public policies.

There are some strategies that contribute positively to longevity and a healthier life.

  1. Positive attitude : Maintaining a positive outlook and a good sense of humor can greatly contribute to greater longevity.
